Balboa Beach Project

Yes folks, we are still planning to move forward with the Balboa Beach Project, but plans have been put on hold until after the POA lawsuit is settled (it is currently being appealed) or the POA Board of Directors decides what to do in response to the legal decision.  We will be full speed ahead to begin the fundraising aspect of the project as soon as possible!

In accordance with its mission to "partner with like-minded organizations to provide entertainment, services and amenities in HSV which appeal to baby boomers," Boomers Rock and the POA have formed a partnership to improve Balboa Beach over the next few years.

The conceptual drawing shows beach renovation plans. All components of the renovation are dependent upon successful funding results. Here's how to interpret the drawing:

What has been accomplished:

  • The beach considerably extended with high-quality sand.
  • An inflatable water trampoline was placed in the water.
  • A trail and spillway bridge, with a trailhead at the beach area. This trail connects with the Magellan parking lot (for expanded parking) and the existing trail system.
In subsequent years, assuming fundraising is successful:
  • An area to be cleared on each side of the trailhead, and picnic tables and barbeque grills will be installed.
  • A ramp and stairs to provide access from the grassy area to the pavilion and restrooms.
  • A lighted Boardwalk (represented by the red line) to be constructed along the water and behind the beach, with bump-outs for seating and where the grass area meets the beach, and an area for a small band. Boats will be able to tie up along the boardwalk at the water's edge.
  • A grassy area will replace the gravel that is currently to the right of the concrete boat ramp.
  • Trees will line the back of the beach for shade.
  • A large covered stage/platform will extend into the water from the grassy area for bands and rental opportunities. Sound will be run to adjacent areas (pavilion, along the boardwalk, etc.).
  • The pavilion will get a facelift -- no more blue! -- replaced with more natural colors and stonework.
  • A fishing pier and place for boat tie-ups will be installed between the beach and the spillway.
  • A fire pit(s) on the beach will be built.

Above is the conceptual drawing for the beach renovation.  All components of the renovation are dependent upon successful funding efforts.  Here's how to interpret the drawing:

In 2014 -- currently underway:
  • A ramp and stairs will provide access from the grassy area to the pavilion/restrooms.
  • The beach will be considerably extended and will have high-quality sand.
  • An inflatable water trampoline will be placed in the water.
  • A trail and spillway bridge will be constructed, with a trailhead at the beach area.  This trail will connect with the Magellan parking lot (for expanded parking) and the existing trail system.

In subsequent years, assuming fundraising is successful:
  • The red lines along the water and behind the beach represent a lighted boardwalk, with bump-outs for seating and, where the grass area meets the beach, an area for a small band.  Boats will be able to tie up along the boardwalk at the water's edge.

  • A fishing pier and place for boat tie-ups will be installed between the beach and the spillway.
  • A fire pit(s) on the beach.

BR volunteers will be called upon this summer to help with spreading the sand and cleaning up the picnic area. Details about scheduling this work detail will be forthcoming.

Fundraising efforts will begin this fall.
